Our mission at Gulf Coast Down Syndrome Society, a nonprofit organization in Mississippi, is to empower individuals and their families while fostering community and celebrating the abilities of people with Down syndrome. Through advocacy and engagement, we aim to enlighten communities about Down syndrome while sharing happiness and promoting acceptance. A Life Worth Celebrating the Extra
Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21, altering development and causing characteristic traits like low muscle tone, small stature, and an upward slant to the eyes. It affects approximately one in every 772 babies in the U.S. There are three types: trisomy 21, mosaicism, and translocation. The Gulf Coast Down Syndrome Society emphasizes using person-first language and avoiding derogatory terms. People with Down syndrome deserve equitable space in this world and deserve a chance to reach their full potential.
What we are doing
The Gulf Coast Down Syndrome Society (GCDSS) provides vital support and resources for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. GCDSS also organizes social events and recreational activities to foster community and personal growth. By promoting inclusion and awareness, we help individuals with Down syndrome reach their full potential.
